Anyone Can Spitfire
April 22-28, 2013 kicks off the 7th Annual Savannah Spoken Word Festival, and this makes me very giddy inside, because anyone can Spitfire.
Spitfire is not only a Poetry Group in Savannah who is hosting this wonderful event, but, it is also a great verb.
To Spitfire means to speak words that move the listener, words that cause reactions of controversy or harmony, or even words that bring people together for a purpose, or rather persuade for a reason.
To Spitfire means to speak your mind freely without worry, without restriction, and best of all without censorship; it gives the ability to use all six of the senses so that you can feel, see, taste, touch, hear, and spiritually encounter all the things that you or someone else has experienced through details, description, and most importantly diction.
The Savannah Spoken Word Festival was founded by Ralph "RenaZance" Dillard in 2005, along with Clinton D. Powell (who has now been deceased for three years, RIP Wordsmith); both are co-founders of the poetry group Spitfire. The Savannah Spoken Word Festival will consist of open mics, poetry slams, and showcases from poets around the world, and even some local ones too.
For example, anyone can Spitfire:
The Projects
Putrid green gray walls.
That inch inward with
the passing of each day.
I stretch out my
abnormally long limbs at an
attempt to stop the inches
growing.
Day six is approaching. Pretty
soon it will become my
coffin. What ugly colors
to have as a bed spread
for an eternal slumber.

Words are a strong weapon that many people take for granted. The Savannah Spoken Word Festival brings back the genuineness and appreciation that people sometimes do not mean to forget about.
We must remember that words bring to life how people feel, think, what they believe in, and bring to us the ability to record both from the past and the present, along with hopes and dreams for the future.
So, do not forget, April 22-28, 2013 the 7th Annual Savannah Spoken Word Festival will be going on. There will be events happening every night here in Savannah so that we can enjoy the freedom to Spitfire.
