Freezin’ for a Reason in 2011
It’s the first day of January 2011 and after a long evening out celebrating the New Year, I am finally on my way to the annual Tybee Polar Plunge! The traffic was intense as literally hundreds of people were streaming onto the island for this popular event. The trip was intriguing as I saw license plates from many states, including New Hampshire (sheeze what a drive!), traveling to take the plunge into the icy waters of Tybee Island.
After driving down Tybrisa a few times, I finally found a parking spot! The competition was on for the wackiest and most amusing costumes of participants taking the dive. While walking to the water, I stumbled across a lady wearing her wedding dress! She said it has been hanging in her closet for years, and recently thought it’d make a great costume for the annual plunge.
As all of the participants lined up (and I realized my Flip cam had croaked), instantly, I witnessed hundreds of people run into the 40° waters off of Tybee Island. Acknowledging that all of these people were actually “freezin’ for a reason,” made the experience all the more exciting. Hundreds of people, ringing in 2011 by contributing to such a great cause was a heck of a way to start the New Year.
Although I did not take the plunge, the day was perfect for participating. The 70° weather helped make the dive into the icy waters a bit more bearable, or so I was told. From the participants I talked to, they were thrilled to help benefit such an amazing cause. (95% of the proceeds fund scholarships to nursing students in the Savannah/Tybee areas.) Here are a few wild and wacky costumes I captured before and after the plunge:
I even got a couple snapshots of our friends at WJCL interviewing a few participants:
