Headed by Executive Director Mary Jane Crouch, America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia is a locally inspired, volunteer-driven nonprofit food bank and community-building organization with the mission of feeding hungry people and strengthening communities in our twenty-one county service area. It was established here in 1981.
Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia cultivates partnerships with more than 300 agencies to distribute food to families in need throughout southeastern Georgia.
In 2007, Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia secured and distributed more than 4.7 million pounds of food and grocery products. Because of the organization's efficiency in procuring food member agencies saved nearly $6.7 million by using the food bank for their feeding programs.
How We Work
America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia's primary function is our warehouse operations. Truckloads of food are donated daily by local and national grocers, businesses, and individuals. Second Harvest inspects and stocks donated items in its 30,000 square foot warehouse. Donations are supplemented with purchased items. Fresh and non-perishable products are then distributed to more than 300 nonprofit agencies in a 21-county service delivery area that includes both urban and rural communities. Our partner agencies include food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, domestic abuse facilities, senior centers and daycare centers for low-income children.
Our Mission
The mission of the food bank is to feed the hungry by distributing nutritious food to nonprofit agencies and at risk elderly and youth, to assist in disaster relief, and work towards long term solutions to hunger and poverty. Our statement of purpose is "Utilizing food and education to improve lives and create a Hunger-Free community".
