St. Simons Island - With the Kids
One of the best ways to start the day is at the beach. Luckily, St. Simons Island has gorgeous beaches; wide for hundreds of yards at low tide. East beach is one of the more popular beaches to hang out on. Although it’s easy to spend an entire day frolicking in the waves, don’t forget that there’s plenty more to do on St. Simons Island.
After you’ve had your beach fun, head over to the Honey Creek Coastal Encounters Nature Center on 1st Street. This center offers a real “hands-on” approach to environmental education. A great place for all ages, take a beach and salt-marsh ecology walk and more! Who says learning can’t be fun?
For lunch, head into the Village, the heart of St. Simons Island. At 303 Mallery Street, you’ll find the Island Rock Café. This casual grille offers sandwiches, seafood, pasta and more. You’ll love the outdoor seating.
After lunch, take some time and wander through Neptune Park located on Beachview Drive. This oceanfront park has a playground, picnic tables, miniature golf and a fishing pier. Depending on the time of year, you’re also likely to hear some live music at the bandstand. The whole family can lounge under the oak trees, swing on the playground or play a round of putt-putt.
Very close to Neptune Park, you’ll find the St. Simons Island Lighthouse and museum. You can climb the 129 steps to the top and take in the awesome view. Or, just let the kids climb it and maybe burn off a little excess energy! Also, during the summer months, on select Sundays, there’s Jazz in the Park right on the lighthouse lawn.
Another fun and unique way to view the island is by bicycling. This is not only a great family activity, but a great way to work in a little exercise on your vacation. There are paths all over the island for you to bike on, from East Beach to the Village out to the airport and all down Frederica Road. Wheel Fun Rentals is located on Ocean Boulevard and offers everything from surreys to beach cruisers to slingshots and mountain bikes. No matter what kind of biker you are, they’ll have something perfect for you and the family to ride.
After your bike ride, it’s time to relax. Head over to Beachcomber BBQ & Grill for some delicious dinner. Located on Ocean Boulevard as well, this is the one and only BBQ place on the island. Famous for their barbecued chicken, pork and ribs, they also offer burgers and hotdogs; in case the kids are feeling a little picky. You’ll definitely want to try their fresh squeezed lemonade as well.
Once you’re done with dinner, its time to head back to Savannah for some well deserved rest.
