Theatres in Savannah, Georgia
History dates some of Savannah's theaters back as far as 1818, which was the year that The Historic Savannah Theatre premiered "The Soldiers Daughter." The people of Savannah desired to keep up with the rapidly progressing town of Charleston, so they petitioned for a Savannah theatre. The envisioned dream was made reality on the opening night in December of 1818. Throughout the next several years, many famous performers would be seen on the stages of this historic theatre. You can still find Georgia's oldest theatre on 222 Bull Street, it's original location. Another historically famous theatre is the Lucas Theatre, the only theatre named after Arthur Lucas, the original owner and owner of numerous theaters in the South. During the Depression, people stopped going to see films and the theatre was forced to close. In 1986, Savannahians set a restoration plan to preserve and restore the Lucas Theatre. This project was complete in 2000 thanks to donations from local Savannahians and celebrities including Kevin Spacey, Clint Eastwood, and the cast and crew of Forest Gump. Both of these acclaimed theaters are worth visiting for an elaborate show, or just to see the architecture and how well history has been preserved.
